How To Choose the Right Tonneau Cover

A tonneau cover is one of the most important accessories you can get for your pickup truck. These truck bed covers aren't only stylish, but they serve a multitude of purposes, such as protection against weather, security for your cargo, and they can even save you gas mileage, just to name a few.
An open pickup is constantly exposed to the elements, which can damage your cargo, increase wear to your truck, and not to mention the damage of lingering water in your truck bed. With the right tonneau cover, you can prolong the life of your truck and increase the value it provides.
The question then becomes, how do I choose the right tonneau cover?
One major aspect to consider is weather. What conditions are you most likely to encounter, and how can your tonneau cover help? Every cover provides UV protection and prevents debris from entering your truck bed, but if moisture getting into your truck bed is an issue, you may want a cover with good weather seals or advanced drainage tubes that lead water out of the bed like the UnderCover Flex.

If you have to deal with heavy wet snow routinely, you are more likely going to want a hard tonneau cover that can stand up to the weight.
If security is your priority, a hard locking tonneau cover like the BAK Revolver X2 Roll-Up tonneau cover may be an option for you. The Revolver X2 hard aluminum roll-up tonneau cover provides unprecedented strength, security, and simplicity for your truck bed, and with its no-profile design, it looks better than ever. This tonneau cover is made up of secure, automatic, rotational locking rails that secure the entire length of your truck bed on each side. The Revolver X2 can be easily rolled up with one hand to provide 100% truck bed access, and without blocking your rear view window or restricting access to stake pocket holes.

Tonneau covers have been proven to save gas mileage by increasing airflow and reducing drag. The more aerodynamic the tonneau cover, the more gas you will save in the long run, so if this is a consideration, you may want to look at tonneau covers with a low-profile design like the Roll-N-Lock M-Series, where the cover runs along a track flush with the truck bed.
Some of the most important points to bring up are style and functionality. There are so many styles to choose from, and it is all based on your own personal preference and what you think will look good and function well with your truck. Try to choose a cover that works with your lifestyle. Do you need full truck bed access often, or ever? What kind of cargo will you be hauling regularly? How secure does it have to be? These are all elements that are important to consider when looking at tonneau covers. At Auto Truck Depot, we carry the highest quality brands, so once you pick one you'll have it for a long time. Let us help you make the right choice the first time.

Choosing the Right Tonneau Cover for Your Budget

There are various types of tonneau covers available to choose from, which can make trying to choose one daunting--especially if you have a budget and want to get the best bang for your buck. Within this article, I will help you through the process by going through each tonneau cover type from the cheapest to the most expensive, and with the pros and cons of each.

Soft Roll-Up Tonneau Covers (Price Range: $329.99 - $727.65)

Access Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
Soft roll up tonneau covers like the Access Original and TruXedo TruXport are some of the most popular and cost-effective truck bed covers available. These covers are designed to roll up to the front of your truck bed to provide full truck bed access when not in use. Even when they are rolled up all the way, they do not cover the back window and take up very little space. These covers are made of high quality vinyl and hardware components to provide lasting coverage. They look great and can even reduce gas mileage by reducing wind drag. The main down side is that despite their locking features, the vinyl construction can be penetrated.

Soft Tri-Fold Tonneau Covers (Price Range: $399.99 – $673.65)

Extang eMAX Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
Some of our most popular soft tri-fold tonneau covers include the Extang Trifecta and eMAX. These are made of vinyl, similar to soft roll-up covers, but they fold open rather than roll. Tri-fold tonneaus contain a frame, which help the cover hold shape and allow it to fold in the tri-fold style. A benefit to having a metal or aluminum frame is that these tonneau covers can generally hold more weight such as heavy snowfall. They fold all the way open, but when propped in the open position, your back window will often be covered.
Vinyl covers are the least expensive tri-fold tonneau covers available, but they are still packed with features that would compliment and add to any pickup truck. The only setback with a vinyl tonneau cover, like the roll-up cover, is the lack of security compared to a hard cover, since vinyl can be easily punctured or cut if someone really wants in.

Hard Tri-Fold Tonneau Covers (Price Range: $899.99 - $2,294.84)

BAKFlip G2 Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
Hard tri-fold covers are the most popular and least expensive of the hard tonneau cover family. Models like the BAKFlip G2 and UnderCover Flex provide incredible truck bed security with locking fibreglass and aluminum panels. They are stronger and more durable than vinyl covers, and can withstand a lot more weight. The only disadvantage of a tri-fold tonneau cover is that it obstructs the back window when propped open all the way.

Hard Roll-Up Tonneau Covers (Price Range: $1,099.99 - $1,489.99)

BAK Roll-X Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
Hard roll-up tonneau covers such as the BAK Roll-X provide all the benefits of a roll-up tonneau cover and hard cover in one. These covers offer incredible security and strength, and the cover rolls all the way open to provide full truck bed access. These covers often have panels that lock individually, letting you lock your cover in any partially opened position, and providing even more security for your truck bed. The only flaw with these covers is that they partially block your back window when rolled all the way open and take up more space then soft roll-up tonneau covers.

Hard One-Piece Tonneau Covers (Price Range: $1,219.99 - $1,999.99)

UnderCover Classic Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
Hard One-Piece covers like the UnderCover Classic or LUX are made of durable ABS or fibreglass materials and provide the most security of any other type of tonneau cover. Due to their one-piece solid construction, these covers are also the strongest, and can handle the most weight. If you’re goal with a tonneau cover is truck bed security, this is the choice for you, although you should be aware of one issue. Because these covers are one piece, they cannot be locked in any partially opened position, nor do they provide full truck bed access. In order to gain access to your entire truck bed, the cover must be removed.

Retractable Tonneau Covers (Price Range: $1,599.99 - $3,299.99

Pace Edwards Electric Bedlocker Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
Retractable tonneau covers provide incredible truck bed security, while at the same time offering all the benefits of a roll-up tonneau cover. They are made of thin panels that roll into a canister at the front of the truck bed. These covers are extremely simple to use and can lock in any position. They are durable and secure, and some covers even operate via remote control, such as the Pace Edwards Bedlocker. One flaw with these covers is that the canister takes up a bit of the front of the truck bed, which can be problematic for some people.
There are various tonneau cover choices available, and for different budgets. Every type of tonneau cover has its own set of unique benefits and disadvantages. In the end, the choice ultimately comes down to personal preference, so choose a tonneau cover that’s right for you!

Will Installing a Tonneau Cover Violate my Truck's Lease?

A common question asked by those looking to purchase a tonneau cover for their leased vehicle is, will installing a tonneau cover violate my lease agreement? The easy answer is no, and this is because most tonneau covers can be easily installed without making any permanent modifications or changes to the vehicle.
Access TonnoSport Roll-Up Tonneau Cover | Auto Truck Depot
There are various reasons why someone may choose to lease over finance a pickup, and one of the primary reasons is that the monthly lease payments are less than monthly loan payments. Preet Benerjee explains in her article, "Lease or buy a car: What's the better option?" that, "instead of of borrowing the full purchase price of the [vehicle], you are only borrowing the amount the [vehicle] will depreciate over the term of your lease" (Benerjee). A leased vehicle can be traded in every 2-3 years for a newer model, which lets drivers abandon older vehicles and the problems they may accumulate, especially if used for work purposes once the lease term ends.
The leasing company is the actual owner of the vehicle, so there are certain restrictions to what can be done to a leased vehicle without violating a lease agreement. Types of changes that may violate a lease agreement include any alterations in suspension or any type of modification that will permanently alter the vehicle. This includes drilling or cutting of any kind.
When choosing accessories for your leased truck, it is important to choose ones that can be installed and removed without making any permanent changes. In the article, "Can I put a tonneau cover on a leased truck? Yes. Here's why", Logan Adams explains, "Roll-Up [Access Tonneau] Covers do not require any permanent modification of a truck. They attach to a truck's bed rails using TITE BITE™ clamps that attach to the bed without drilling and maintain a superior grip between the truck bed cover and the bed" (Adams).
Check out this installation video from Access to see the process.

The majority of tonneau covers, like the Extang Solid Fold 2.0, can be installed and removed without any modification, and even used on the next truck. The best thing you can do is check that the tonneau cover you are thinking about purchasing does not require any type of drilling or vehicle modification to install. This can be done by reviewing the product's installation manuals, and if you still have some uncertainty, the best thing you can do is contact the leasing company to find out.
